South of London, the South Downs National Park runs across Sussex and Hampshire, its open downland and heathland offering a Deerhound room to stretch out away from city parks. The park runs a “Take the Lead” campaign asking dog walkers to keep to paths and use a lead on heathland and gorse-covered downland between March and September, when ground-nesting birds such as woodlark, nightjar and Dartford warbler are breeding on the ground. Further north, Surrey, Berkshire, Kent and Oxfordshire add a mix of commons, woodland and farmland to the walking on offer.

For veterinary care, the University of Surrey’s School of Veterinary Medicine, based on Daphne Jackson Road in Guildford, adds a further teaching and clinical presence to a region already well served by general and referral practices around London and the home counties.

Tips for South East and London

  • On South Downs heathland, keep dogs on a lead between March and September to protect ground-nesting birds such as woodlark and nightjar.
  • Adders live on South Downs heathland; a bite can be serious for a dog, so keep dogs close and on paths in these areas.
  • The University of Surrey’s School of Veterinary Medicine in Guildford offers veterinary teaching and clinical facilities in the region.
  • Livestock worrying is a criminal offence on farmland across the region, including on public footpaths crossing grazing land.
