The north’s two big national parks, the Yorkshire Dales and the Lake District, give a Deerhound owner here wide open walking country: drystone-walled fell country, limestone pavement and long ridge paths that suit a sighthound’s need to cover ground at a steady pace. Both parks ask dog walkers to follow the Countryside Code, keeping dogs under control and in sight and clearing up after them, and in the Dales dogs must be kept on a lead on public rights of way and in any field where livestock are present.

For veterinary care, the University of Liverpool runs its Small Animal Teaching Hospital at Leahurst on the Wirral, offering referral-level treatment alongside the university’s veterinary school. Owners travelling into the Dales or the Lakes for a show or a walking holiday are within reach of this hospital as well as the region’s general and emergency practices.

Tips for North of England

  • In the Yorkshire Dales, keep dogs on a short lead from March to July, when ground-nesting birds are easily disturbed and will abandon a nest that has gone cold.
  • Livestock worrying is a criminal offence under the Dogs (Protection of Livestock) Act, recently amended to cover more animals, public footpaths and higher fines.
  • The University of Liverpool’s Small Animal Teaching Hospital at Leahurst, on the Wirral, provides referral-level veterinary care for the wider North West.
  • Both the Yorkshire Dales and the Lake District ask visitors to keep dogs under close control near livestock and to stick to paths where advised.
