The north’s two big national parks, the Yorkshire Dales and the Lake District, give a Deerhound owner here wide open walking country: drystone-walled fell country, limestone pavement and long ridge paths that suit a sighthound’s need to cover ground at a steady pace. - In the Yorkshire Dales, keep dogs on a short lead from March to July, when ground-nesting birds are easily disturbed and will abandon a nest that has gone cold.
- Livestock worrying is a criminal offence under the Dogs (Protection of Livestock) Act, recently amended to cover more animals, public footpaths and higher fines.
