East of England covers flat, open country across Essex, Hertfordshire, Cambridgeshire, Norfolk, Suffolk and Lincolnshire, much of it farmland and fen with long sightlines that suit a sighthound’s gait even where hills are scarce. The Norfolk and Suffolk coasts add shingle beach and saltmarsh to the mix, ground where nesting birds are especially vulnerable to disturbance and where walkers are generally asked to keep dogs under close control during the breeding season from spring into summer.
Veterinary teaching for the region is based at the University of Cambridge’s Department of Veterinary Medicine on Madingley Road, which runs an associated veterinary hospital alongside its undergraduate and postgraduate programmes and its own enquiries and referral contacts. Owners in Hertfordshire and Essex can usually reach Cambridge or London for specialist referral without difficulty, while those further north in Norfolk and Lincolnshire have a longer road journey either way.
Tips for East of England
- Keep dogs under close control on Norfolk and Suffolk beaches and saltmarsh during the bird breeding season, when ground-nesting chicks are most vulnerable.
- The University of Cambridge’s Department of Veterinary Medicine, on Madingley Road, runs a veterinary hospital alongside its teaching programmes.
- Fenland and farmland footpaths often cross grazing land; livestock worrying is a criminal offence wherever sheep or cattle are present.
- All dogs must be microchipped and registered under the Microchipping of Dogs (England) Regulations, with records updated after any change of keeper.
