Regions

Before you take on a deerhound

Breed clubs first. The Deerhound Club and the Scottish Deerhound Club keep puppy and rehoming lists and know which litters are planned; there are few deerhound litters in a year and a waiting list is normal.
Health tests in writing. Ask any breeder for Factor VII (a bleeding disorder found in the breed) DNA results for both parents and for the kennel's record on liver shunt, heart disease and bloat; see the guides for what each test means.
Sighthound-aware vets. Deerhounds and other sighthounds have unusual blood values and can react differently to some anaesthetics; a practice that sees greyhounds and lurchers regularly is worth the drive.
Rescue is a real option. Adult deerhounds and deerhound crosses do come through breed rescue and sighthound charities; they suit a home that already understands a big, quiet, fast dog.
Space, fencing, fabric. A deerhound needs a secure, high-fenced area to gallop, a soft place to lie, and owners who accept that a wagging tail clears a coffee table.

Why this list exists

Gentom bred and showed Scottish deerhounds from the late 1960s; the family's kennel pages are kept on this site as they were published. Because those pages still bring visitors who are looking for a puppy, a rescue hound or a vet, the site now points them to organisations that are active today — found through their own websites and checked in September 2026.
